Southern Pacific had over 650 of these Offset Side cars. They received the lettering seen here in the 1960s. This group was assigned to Collier Carbon & Chemical in California. 73021 Southern Pacific Offset Side single; 73022 SP 2-Pack; 73023 SP 3-Pack; 73026 SP 6-Pack.
Atlantic Coast Line took delivery of these Offset Side cars in this paint scheme in 1952. Past Releases - N Scale 70 Ton Offset Side 3-bay Hoppers.
The 1,700 mile Central of Georgia system swarmed across Georgia and Alabama with tendrils into neighboring states. Their motto “The Right Way ” appeared on much of the freight car fleet. They came under the control of the Southern Railway in 1963 after a brief period of control by Frisco. 73051 CoG Offset Side single; 73052 CoG 2-Pack; 73053 CoG 3-Pack.
Canadian Pacific had 3,500 of these Offset Side cars. The script herald was adopted in the early 60s and survived in revenue service on some of these cars at least into the mid-80s. 73081 Canadian Pacific-Script Offset Side single; 73083 CP-Script 3-Pack; 73086 CP-Script 6-Pack.
New York Central obtained their first 3-bay Offset Side Hoppers in the late 1920 ’s. Most were rebuilt beginning in 1949 and soldiered on for many more years. Chicago & North Western received a large fleet of these Offset Side cars from builder Pullman Standard in the late ‘40s. Many remained in service into the ‘80s. 73061 C&NW Offset Side single; 73062 C&NW 2-Pack; 73063 C&NW 3-Pack; 73066 C&NW 6-Pack.
Burlington Route had over 3,000 of these offset side cars which they built in their own Havelock Shops between 1949 and 1952. Most survived into the Burlington Northern era. Rock Island had been picking up 70 ton 3-bay offset side hoppers in quantity since 1949. They leased this particular batch from United States Railway Equipment in 1971. These cars (which had been built years before by Pullman Standard) had a good going-over by USRE and were equipped with modern roller bearing trucks. ACI tags were mandatory by this time and are included on these cars. 73101 Rock Island single; 73102 2-Pack; 73103 3-Pack.
The 600 mile Monon covered Indiana with an X shaped system. One axis linked Chicago with Indianapolis and the other axis linked the Great Lakes port of Michigan City to Louisville. The two routes crossed in the small city of Monon, Indiana. Monon would merge with Louisville & Nashville in 1971. 73111 Monon single; 73112 2-Pack; 73113 3-Pack.
Boston & Maine picked up these cars second hand in 1962. They had been built by Bethlehem 13 years before but were still in great shape. B&M moved a great deal of stone for the region’s growing construction business. The 1,500 mile Minneapolis & St. Louis ran from the Twin Cities and points in South Dakota, south through central Iowa, then east to connections with the eastern trunk lines in Peoria, Illinois. They presented themselves as a bridge route from the Northwest to the East whilst avoiding the congestion of Chicago. Ironically, coal was their largest single commodity. 73131 single car $21.79; 73132 2-Pack $43.58.
Milwaukee Road became a major originator of coal traffic in 1921 with the acquisition of the Chicago Terre Haute Southeastern. This extended Milwaukee ’s reach into the coal mining regions of southern Indiana. The 10,000+ mile Southern Railway System blanketed the southern Appalachia region and consequently hauled much of the coal produced. Prior to the 1960 adoption of the big block style lettering, Southern lettered their freight equipment with the classic Railroad Roman style. Until the 1980s, Southern used their full name as their reporting marks with large numerals. Southern delivered much of their coal traffic to connecting roads at Southern’s gateways in St.Louis, Louisville, Cincinnati, Washington D.C., Jacksonville, New Orleans, and Memphis. 73151 single car $21.79; 73152 2-Pack $43.58; 73153 3-Pack $65.37.
